Assumptions

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Today when I was walking to my car after running an errand, I shrieked.
There was a huge gash on the back bumper of my car.
The paint was scrapped off, several places were dented, and I was livid.
Our car isn't even a year old, and I was already the victim of a hit and run accident,
and we had just gotten the car fixed about a month ago.
I called my husband.
Someone hit our car and just left. I can't believe this. There's no note, no nothing.
We're going to have to get this fixed again. Can you even believe it?!
In my mind I was cursing at the inconsiderate human being who thought
it was okay to nail into the side of my car, and then drive away. UGH.
I was on my knees rubbing where the paint had gotten scrapped off,
realizing that our car looked completely wrecked.

I stood up, and my eye caught the far side of the parking lot.
I whispered to my husband,
Oh my gosh. This isn't our car.
He started laughing uncontrollably. Like he often does at my fantastic life experiences.
He said I'm with two co-workers, can I please tell them?
Whatever. At least our car was not the one with the dents all over it.

This experience got me thinking.
Maybe to save face and create a learning experience out of it, I don't know.
But I started thinking of all the times I've jumped to conclusions,
passed judgement before knowing the whole story,
and seen other people do the same.

It's easy to think that you've placed all the pieces together
and know exactly how to judge someone else's situation.
It's easy to have your feelings get hurt when you misinterpret what someone says to you,
and to assume that a bad event is going to become a worst case scenario.
We're human, and we think like that sometimes.
But today I realized that if we take the time to stop and look around,
we might find ourselves standing at the completely wrong car.

literally.

That is fabulous and so so something I would do (having attempted to get into a stranger's car with my car unlocker once or twice).

This is such a cute story and also a great message. I love the outlook that you share with us on life! Always something to think about!

Wow this was so funny! But the message behind it is even better. This definitely has me thinking about something that I'm going through now. I needed to hear this,

I did something similar. My son and I were at a park and I saw a guy - heavily tatooed, earrings, baggy clothes - and I immediately thought 'loser'. WOW! Out of all the guys/dads playing with their daughters, he turned out to tbe the most imvolved, engaged and thoroughly content and happy man there. My opinion did an about face that day. I'm glad and I thank him.

That is amazing--very funny! But I know what you mean--it seems we want to believe the worst before taking a moment to think and gain some perspective.

Ashley, I just laughed out loud! This is too funny, but a great analogy. I try to be conscious of the way I view others and to not judge people...especailly those I do not know. I bet your hubby loved this one :)

funniest thing i have ever read! similar thing happened to me, except instead i walked up to a car identical to mine, tried to open it and would say..

"wtf, something is wrong with my key! why is our alarm going off! i can't turn it off, omg what do i do!"

hubby looks at me and says, babe that's not our car. we don't have a crack in the windshield. LOL

....back away slowly. then RUN!

ahha blonde moment. Very true though that we jump to conclusions before fully investigating situations in our lives.

That story is amazing!
I love how you can turn around something to hilarious and slightly embarassing and reflect on something that is worth reflecting on.

It's people like you who can turn anything into positivity that will change the world :)

Why Girls Are Weird said...

I'm really bad at jumping to conclusions - I'm one of those "do first, ask questions later." That tends to get me into some trouble which is not a great thing.

I absolutely need to keep this in mind. Both because it's a good lesson and because it made me giggle ;-)

I stood there trying to figure out WHY my door wasn't opening DUH!! anyway cute post but I also love the part about judgment it is so true....I think it is so important to try and see the other side before we judge-

This is SO funny because I did the SAME thing outside of Whole Foods the other week. I even started crying because my car that is less than a year old was totally smashed on the back. I bent down to start feeling the chipped off paint, then realized that that license plate was different. So then I gracefully stood up and walked to my car...which was next to it...while other people in the parking lot were left wondering why I was crying about someone else's car. Dramatic experience and the last time I went to that whole foods.
